Be your own boss!
SCC software development graduate Heather Wood’s web design business, Ravenous Raven Design, has developed a national and international client base since she graduated in 2010. With 13-year-old and 9-month-old daughters, Heather says, “I wanted to be my own boss and work at home when I wanted to.” SCC’s software development program made it possible.
A former kitchen designer, Heather decided to go back to school at SCC to become a paralegal. “But, I was walking down the hall in Old Main one day and started talking to software development instructor Tom Affholter. He sold me on the program!”
Heather knew from the beginning that she wanted to start her own business. She launched Ravenous Raven Design by going business-to-business, knocking on doors and asking if they needed a website or wanted to improve existing sites. Many took Heather up on her offer, and before long, there were referrals and recommendations – and more business! Today, she works with some 50 clients in seven states and seven foreign countries.
“Software development is ideal for a lot of women,” Heather noted. She enjoys the flexibility of working from home and around her daughters’ schedules. She concludes, “It’s a hard program, but my instructors at SCC were always there to help. They gave me everything I needed to succeed.”
