GROUNDS WORKER

PART-TIME, NON-PERMANENT POSITIONS

OPEN UNTIL FILLED

 

Community Colleges of Spokane is accepting applications to develop an applicant pool of qualified candidates for part-time, non-permanent, seasonal grounds workers in the facilities department.  Positions are for approximately five (4) months from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

 

Perform a variety of duties to assist in the development and care of campus grounds, maintain shrubs, assist in maintaining irrigation systems, and operate grounds equipment under minimum supervisor.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Mow, edge, aerate, and maintain campus grounds.

·         Apply/remove bark from shrub beds.

·         Remove debris, leaves, brush, and trimmings from grounds, streets, sidewalks, stairs, and parking lots.

·         Rake, pull, and hoe to remove weeds from grounds or around structures.

·         Assist in installing/maintaining campus irrigation systems.

·         Prune and thin shrubs; lift limbs on trees.

·         Use a variety of manual tools and equipment such as rakes, hand edger, shovels, and wheelbarrows.

·         Use a variety of manual tools such as pruning sheers, loppers, and bow saw.

·         Operate power and motorized equipment such as light tractors, front end loaders, sod cutters, weed trimmers, backpack blowers, gas operated hand blowers, snow blowers (push and riding), and lawn mowers (push and riding).

·         Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.

·         Remove snow and ice from campus sidewalks, roads, stairs, and parking lots.

·         Sand and de-ice campus stairs, walks, roads, and parking lots,’

·         Perform related duties as assigned.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (Minimum Qualifications)

·         Must possess a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.

·         Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.

·         A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of CCS.

·         The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, community and technical college system.

·         A demonstrated understanding and value for the contributions that a diverse workforce can make to the success of the organization and the students we serve.

 

PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (Desirable Qualification)

·         High school diploma or equivalent.

·         One year experience in grounds maintenance or landscape setting.

·         Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance/servicing.

·         Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

·         Ability to work independently and in team settings.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess ability to perform heavy outside work in all types of weather.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly.  Must be able to climb, pull, stoop, crawl, and crouch while performing duties.  Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.

 

RATE OF PAY AND HOURS OF WORK

$9.31 per hour.  Work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.  Total hours per year will not exceed 1050 per year.  Position is not eligible for benefits.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States.  This is an absolute condition of employment.  In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles.  Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment.  Requires criminal background check.  If using personal vehicle for travel, proof of driver’s license and car insurance required.  Due to the amount of applications received, applications are kept on file for only six months.
