Japanese ghost stories take to the stage at SCC
Posted Friday, October 30, 2009
The Spokane Community College Players present “In a Grove: Four Japanese Stories” by Eric Coble November 13-15 and 20-22 in the Lair-Student Center auditorium, Bldg. 6, 1810 N. Greene St. The production is directed by Adam Sharp, SCC film and theater instructor.
The play explores four Japanese folk stories, each carrying important lessons and morals for the audience. The stories all occur in the same village over a 100-year period. Colorful characters include Keizuke, who must keep a secret; Oni demons, who learn they have something to fear from humans; Uta, a singing monk; and Hyroku, a hungry stranger. Each must make important decisions, but may not make the right one and thus pay dearly.
Curtain is 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13, 14, 20 and 21, with matinees at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15 and 22. The November 21 performance is sign language interpreted and November 22 is a food bank benefit featuring free admission with a donation of a nonperishable food item.
Admission is $4 for adults or $3 for students with ID and students. Admission for children 10 years and younger is free.
