CCS Board of Trustees Approve Naming the Ray Athletic Center
Maurice Ray is well-known among most Spokane athletes and has received numerous honors for his more than 30 years of leading the athletic programs at Community Colleges of Spokane. This winter he learned CCS was honoring him with far more than a title or a plaque, it was naming the new $18 million Spokane Falls Community College gymnasium after the local sports icon.

“Maury Ray built an outstanding program here in Spokane and recognizing his accomplishments by naming the new facility in his honor seems only fitting.  There is no one who could be more deserving of this type of tribute,” said Ken Burrus, CCS director of athletics.
The Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) Board of Trustees recently approved naming the new gymnasium at Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) after Maurice “Maury” Ray, former athletic director, coach and longtime supporter of CCS athletics.
Ray spent more than 30 years at CCS. In 1978 he became the athletic director and dean of health, physical education and recreation. He built the district athletic program, combining SFCC and Spokane Community College teams and growing the number of sports offered. Under his leadership, CCS teams won 94 Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) championships and more than 200 regional titles. He retired in 2005.
He has been inducted into the NWAC Hall of Fame, CCS Athletic Hall of Fame and the Inland Empire Sports Hall of Fame. In 2012, NWAC began the Maury Ray Cup, an annual award given to the most successful NWAC institution.
The $18 million project includes a renovation of the main 23,700-square-foot gymnasium, fitness center and weight room. The Ray Athletic Center will get new bleachers, scoreboard systems and lighting. It will add classrooms for physical education, athletics and faculty offices, student lounges and a two-story climbing wall. It broke ground in April 2017, and it is scheduled to be completed in June 2018.
SFCC student government voted to pay for the project using student funds over the next 20 years. Their vote of support in 2015 made the project possible during a time when the state of Washington has few funds available for construction projects at community colleges.
Designed by Integrus Architecture PS, it also adds classrooms for physical education, student lounges and a two-story climbing wall. Lydig Construction, Inc. is the general contractor.
