Spokane Head Start has a new facility in the northern part of Spokane with openings available to serve area infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Spokane County Head Start, part of Community Colleges of Spokane, opened the center, the Northeast Child Development Center (NCDC), in a wing of the Northeast Community Center at 4001 N. Cook, Spokane, near Shaw Middle School this summer. The program provides early childhood education, social services and health services for eligible young children and families, including those with special needs.

The center includes an infant room (ages six weeks to 12 months), a young toddler room and three mixed-age (one year to three years) toddler classrooms for a total of 40 openings. There are also two, full-day preschool classrooms with a total of 37 openings. For more information or an application, please call 509-279-6351.

Spokane Head Start, Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) and Early Head Start also have begun offering free part-day preschool at Woodridge Elementary, located at 5100 Shawnee Ave., Spokane. There are 68 part-day preschool slots for income eligible children ages three to five years.  For more information or an applications, please call 509-533-4800.

Spokane County Head Start serves nearly 1,600 children at more than 30 sites in Spokane County. Programs vary by age and site and include part-day and full-day classrooms.  Classroom services include nutritious meals and snacks following United States Department of Agriculture food guidelines, health screenings and rich learning environments supported by highly qualified staff.  A home-based option is available for families during pregnancy and those with infants and toddlers up to age three. There is no charge for Head Start, ECEAP or Early Head Start services, but the sites that provide full-day childcare do charge a fee for services. Learn more at http://ccs.spokane.edu/Head-Start.
