Community Colleges of Spokane Hosts Special Events for Veterans on Campuses: March 16 & 17

Area veterans and their families are encouraged to find out more about programs and opportunities at Spokane Community College and Spokane Falls Community College. The two colleges recently received special designation as Military Friendly Schools because of their comprehensive support and services for veterans.

Both campuses are hosting special veterans’ campus events this month to connect service members with vital information and resources for earning a degree or technical certificate from the Community Colleges of Spokane. Veterans will have the opportunity to meet with on and off campus employers, tour the veteran’s resource centers, meet with veteran’s services staff and walk through the information fairs.  Because each of the colleges offer different programs, people are encouraged to attend both events to determine which college is the best fit.

Service Member Day - Spokane Falls Community College
Monday, March 16, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Student Union – Building 17
3410 W Fort George Wright Drive

Service Member Day - Spokane Community College
Tuesday, March 17, 9:30 a.m. - noon p.m.
Lair Student Center – Building 6
1810 N Greene Street

Parking is free at both events.

Veterans may be particularly interested in learning more about the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) programs, where they can earn college credit for relevant experience or training through military, professional or technical job experience. Eligible students may be significantly closer to their degree than they think.

The SFCC event will host special guests from Fairchild Air force Base to witness SFCC leadership accept their Military Friendly School designation and network with veterans attending the information fair. The ceremony starts at 10 a.m., with the fair continuing through 1 p.m. The half-day event will include information stations about vet-specific financial aid, credit for prior learning, transfer programs, GI Bill certifying and Vet Club information.

The SCC event will showcase the courses, programs and services it has available to service members and their families at its Service Members Day. It will include campus tours, information about technical and AA degree transfer programs and open houses at specialized career and technical programs including: Aviation Maintenance, Criminal Justice, Fire Science, Heavy Equipment/Diesel, Welding, and more.  In addition to the open houses, SCC will have its 5th annual Veteran’s Fair @ the Lair event providing information, food and prizes from 50 different tables representing campus resources and employment opportunities for veterans. SCC officials and the SCC Vet’s Club had their Military Friendly School signing ceremony last month with veterans and SCC President Scott Morgan taking part.

Editor’s Note: Contact CCS Interim Communications Manager Mark Baker. mark.baker@ccs.spokane.edu 434-5059 for more information. We would be happy to arrange an interview with veteran students from both schools to discuss the challenges and opportunities with returning to school.
