As part of Welcome Week to welcome students to fall quarter and in honor of the International Day of Peace, SCC’s student activities board is bringing the event to campus.

Students in the Skilled Trades Program (STP) at Spokane Community College will benefit from extra support thanks to a new grant from the Washington State Department of Transportation. The 11-week pre-apprenticeship program gives students experience in a number of trades before choosing one.

Twenty students in Newport will have the opportunity to earn a welding and fabrication certificate, without leaving town, beginning in January. The one-year certificate is being offered at the Spokane Community Newport Center, and thanks to a $49,152 United States Department of Agriculture Rural Business Development Grant, there will be additional student support.

Cyber security professionals are in high demand and, starting this September, people can earn a cyber security bachelor of applied science (BAS) at Spokane Falls Community College. This BAS degree is aimed at students who already have completed an associate of applied science (AAS) degree in information technology, which also is offered at SFCC.

The candidates are Glen Cosby, vice president of student services at SCC; Jenni Martin, acting vice president of instruction at SCC; and Marcia Wong Somer, previously associate dean of instruction and evening administrator, business technology, culinary and baking arts, wine, early learning, parent education and continuing education at Lake Washington Institute of Technology, Kirkland, Wash.
