CCS update: H1N1/swine flu

New! 10/27/09 update from SRHD

Working closely with Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD), CCS is preparing for the flu season -- both seasonal and H1N1/swine flu.

According to SRHD, pandemic H1N1 flu is a new flu virus with the same symptoms as seasonal flu: High fever (> or = 100° F), cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

FAQs for CCS students, faculty and staff

It  spreads the same way seasonal flu does -- person to person via an infected person's uncontrolled or uncovered coughing and sneezing. It also can be picked up touching an infected object or surface.

The health district suggests that if you typically get a seasonal flu shot, do so early this year.

TIPS FOR PREVENTING COLDS AND FLU
Source: Spokane Regional Health District
Get a flu shot each year to prevent the flu.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze, cough or blow your nose. Quickly throw away used tissues, then wash your hands.

If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve/elbow – not into your hands.

Clean and disinfect surfaces in your home that are frequently touched, such as light switches, doorknobs, faucets and appliance handles.

Don’t share food, utensils or beverages with others. Don’t share things like towels, lipstick, toys, cigarettes or anything else that might be contaminated with respiratory germs.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can spread this way.

Avoid close contact with sick people. Most germs are spread when a sick person coughs, sneezes or talks.

Stay at home if you have a cough or fever.

Wear a mask in a medical office if asked.

Always follow your doctor’s instructions and take medicine as prescribed.
