Bicycle safety

On the road

Helmets are a must -- at all times. No excuses!

Cyclists must observe all traffic laws, including stopping at intersections and yielding to pedestrians. And do warn pedestrians when you are passing them.

Use hand signals when turning, stopping and changing lanes.

Off the road

Be sure to always secure your bike with a heavy-duty U lock or chain, securing your front wheel or bike frame to a bike rack or other stationary object. And take note of where you're parking your bike, avoiding doorways, stairs or handicapped access areas.

Permanently mark or engrave your bike with an identifying number and keep a record of that number for the police or public safety in the event your bike is stolen.
