Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) will serve as the lead host for six of Eurasia’s most dynamic and highly educated emerging leaders through the Rumsfeld Foundation’s Open World Program next week. The group will be in Spokane to learn about accountable government and economic development while experiencing some American culture and building connections to our community.

Local high school teachers and college instructors will once again have an opportunity to participate in a sustainability workshop project hosted by SFCC faculty members, Scott Rollins and Adriana Bishop. The two instructors are co-principal Investigators for a National Science Foundation grant to provide college instructors and K-12 teachers with tools for integrating sustainability into existing programs through problem-based learning communities. The project focus is to support future science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce by partnering with business and industry on sustainability initiatives. Upcoming workshop registration will begin in early spring for the June 2017 projects.

SFCC Information Technology students led an IT summer camp in June funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.  Seventy middle school girls participated in the camp, which was taught by six female IT students.

Community Colleges of Spokane's marketing department captured a 2015 Paragon Award from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations. NCMPR presented the awards March 13 during its three-day national conference in St. Louis.

Students from Spokane Community College’s Aviation Maintenance Club traveled to Puyallup to attend the annual Northwest Aviation Conference and Trade Show Feb. 19-21.
 
Four of the students, Daniel Baker, Amiee Moshburgh, Jeffrey Drohman and Wayne Wade, placed first in the inaugural Northwest Regional Aviation Maintenance Competition.

The Spokane Falls Community College drama department is staging a production of “The Sly Fox” by Larry Gelbart at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 3 – 12 and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6 and 13, in the Spartan Theater, located in the SFCC Humanities Building.

Meet Levi Taylor. He is the leading scorer for the Spokane Sasquatch Men’s Basketball Team that finished their regular season last weekend in first place with a 25-3 record. As they head towards NWAC playoffs next month, Levi found some time to reflect on his life, challenges and victories with Jim Allen from the Spokesman Review.

SCC is very excited to welcome visiting Fulbright Scholar Marcos Lopes to their campus. He will be a visiting instructor during his 9 month stay, focus on internationalizing the SCC campus. He is passionate about defining the term Latin America, both from a geographical and a historical context. He studied the historical significance of photography and the effects it has on a cultures historical context for the Phd work. Please say hi to Marcos and make him feel welcomed in our community.

Spokane Falls Community College student Armando Garcia will be honored with a Transforming Lives Award from the Washington State Association of College Trustees (ACT) on Jan. 24 in Olympia. Only five students, out of 388,000 students across 34 colleges, are awarded each year.

The Community Colleges of Spokane’s Center for Workforce and Continuing Education has been honored for excellence in the Best Marketing category by the Learning Resources Network (LERN), the world’s largest lifelong learning association.  The winning entry, designed by CCS’s Public Relations and Marketing Department, was included in a showcase of internationally exemplary programs at the 2015 LERN Annual Conference in New Orleans. Information about the submission was on display in the conference Hall of Learning throughout the three-day conference, Dec. 2-5.  In addition, the winning programs will be featured in future LERN publications and on LERN’s website.
